SUMMARY:Lukács György 140 – Osztályharc és kultúra
DESCRIPTION:Konferenciát szervez az ELTE BTK Filozófia Intézete és a Lukács Archívum Nemzetközi Alapítvány.\n140 éve született Lukács György\, az egyetlen világszerte ismert magyar filozófus. A konferencia előadásai e két hívószó köré rendeződnek. \nTeljes program

SUMMARY:Global Crises\, Ethnographic Futures. Revisiing Gypsy Economy (2016) Ten Years Later
DESCRIPTION:Organised by the Institute for Minority Studies\, HUN-REN Centre for Social Sciences\, with the support of the Inequalities and Democracy Workgroup of the CEU Democracy Institute. \nDate: Thursday\, 26 June 2025\, and Friday\, 27 June 2025 (morning only) \nPlace: CEU Budapest campus 1051 Budapest\, Nádor utca 13. room 301 (entry from Nádor 15.) \nConveners: Martin Fotta (Institute of Ethnology\, Czech Academy of Sciences) and Gergely Pulay\, (Institute for Minority Studies\, HUN-REN Centre for Social Sciences) \nSummary: This workshop brings together anthropologists to critically engage with themes raised in the volume Gypsy Economy: Romani Livelihoods and Notions of Worth in the 21st Century (Berghahn\, 2016)\, a decade after its publication. It will provide an opportunity to reflect on how the academic and epistemological niche envisioned in the volume has developed. Key topics include shifts in anthropological practice; precarity and economic strategies; global crises and locally experienced insecurity; and transformations in livelihood practices\, moral frameworks\, kinship\, and informality. It will explore what new directions have emerged since\, or remained invisible at the time the book was written\, the limitations of ethnographic representation\, and how ethnographic engagements with economic practices not solely based on wage labour have evolved over the past decade. By bringing together scholars working on these themes\, it aims to serve as a starting point for a more sustained conversation on these issues in the CEE region. \nWorkshop Programme \nDAY 1 \n10.00-10.15 Opening & Welcome \n10.15-12.30 Session 1 \n1. Of Sons and Daughters (2022\, 84’) \nby Dana Bunescu & Cătălina Tesăr \nPeli and Nina are a couple from a traditional Roma community in Romania who were married by arrangement and are parents to a little girl. However\, local custom posits that a marital union can only endure if the couple conceive a boy who can later inherit the family’s badge – the chalice (tahtai). \nThe screening is followed by a discussion with Cătălina Tesăr \nDAY 2 \n9.30-11.00 Session 3 \n1. Martin Fotta – Householding as a Mode of Integration \n2. SUMMARY:Jour Fixe 159 | Gárdos Judit: The missing link - An empirical study of social scientific explanation and understanding
DESCRIPTION:A HUN-REN Társadalomtudományi Kutatóközpont (MTA Kiváló Kutatóhely) \nSzociológiai Intézete \ntisztelettel meghívja 159. Jour Fixe eseményére \n  \nThe missing link – An empirical study of social scientific explanation and understanding\nElőadó: Gárdos Judit (HUN-REN TK SZI) \nHozzászólók: Hans-Martin Gärtner (HUN-REN Nyelvtudományi Kutatóközpont); Janky Béla (Recens) \nIdőpont: 2025. június 26. csütörtök 13:00 \nHelyszín: Az eseményt hibrid formában tartjuk meg. \nSzemélyesen: Szociológiai Intézet 1097 Budapest Tóth Kálmán utca 4.;  B.1.37 \nOnline: Zoom link: \nHAMAROSAN \nAbsztrakt \nThis article empirically examines the narrative strategies and the role of theories in sociological explanation and understanding\, using examples from contemporary quantitative sociology of attitudes. Two journal articles and their narrative processes are examined in order to demonstrate how an empirical analysis of sociological explanation using critical close reading of scientific journal texts can be conducted. In efforts to achieve understanding\, researchers may engage in narratively reframing their results\, introducing entities that seem necessary for a convincing explanation and emphasizing even the smallest differences between groups. Causal reasoning often appears when researchers interpret their data\, but the mechanisms or why an effect happens are not objects of the scientific inquiry itself\, there is a missing link that would connect the explanations with the data. Explanation is achieved through implicit theories\, interpretation and reframing of data and variables. Social scientific theories do not seem to play a crucial role in researchers’ strategies aiming at making social facts understandable. If hypotheses are presented\, they are not mutually exclusive and rather intuitively and easily verifiable. The researchers heavily rely on former knowledge and assumptions about the social world when interpreting and explaining data. Their work often does not examine empirically how the genesis\, content\, or transformation of attitudes in time might be rendered understandable.
